How The Field Experience Changed Me
This field experience reassured my preconceived idea that I wanted to become a high school algebra teacher when I grew up. I enjoyed my internship experience and through working with a teacher I already knew through my own high school, I got to step into the shoes of what it actually feels like. I have learned to take more initiative in helping out in the classroom and I hope I can use that initiative when I become a teacher to try out new things with my students and provoke an inviting environment. I realized the hard work that is put into becoming and maintaining a good and successful teacher, especially in Virginia Beach City Public Schools system. I learned that it is necessary to yell at your students sometimes. It evokes discipline and a sense of respect. As a student, it is hard to see the reasoning behind teacher’s actions and it often feels like the teacher is often out to get you, but from the perspective of a teacher, they just want to see you succeed. The passion that Ms;. Houchins reflects in her classroom is something I wish to possess when I become a teacher and I hope that I began to embody that passion through my internship experience. I have become a more confident person when teaching lessons in front of actual students through trial and error. I’ve realized that not everyone can be perfectly successful all the time and it may take a few mistakes to realize what one should be doing. This internship experience helped me go through those mistakes with the help of a cooperating teacher to correct my mistakes when necessary. It was definitely a great learning experience and I will utilize the many skills that I have gained from working as a student teacher in an actual classroom with actual stundets.
